Many know Kitaro's music. You've heard it on the radio, at practically every wedding, at every other function; and of course, in the elevators and shopping centres. We managed to get in touch with the man when he was in town, to talk about his current album, Thinking Of You. And this is what he had to say:

Tell us more about your latest album, Thinking Of You.
I composed these songs last year, last winter. There’s a story behind the piano on the front cover, it’s a really sad thing. My house studio had a water pipe that burst and this piano was under the pipe that broke. That was very sad for me, because this piano was a really important piano for me. I composed my songs on this piano and I have a lot of memories of this piano. I’ve had this for almost 10 years, I don’t know how many songs I’ve composed on it. But I still have this piano, I’m trying to repair it. Maybe it’ll take a couple of years, but I took pictures of this piano and used it for the album cover. As for the title (it's) about my audience and my family.

Do you have any particular favourites?
I like every song, especially ‘Fiesta’ and ‘Thinking Of You’, where my friend played a Caribbean flute. I’m going to try to kind of collaborate with other artistes. And ‘Fiesta’ and ‘Estrella’, those songs are Spanish sounding, like by artistes from the Spanish area.

You’ve won a lot of awards, how does that feel?
That’s a really good thing, having nominated albums and songs. I think I was nominated at the Grammies six times. It was good, but it’s not the reason we’re working. We compose the songs for the audience, for all the living things. I never had any education in music, I learnt to compose music myself. That doesn’t seem professional, but I’d like to keep on doing this still, for a long time.

What do you think of your music being used at weddings and the like?
I never think about my music as being used in that kind of situations. But I had the experience of the wedding, even at the occasion of the birth or death. Some of my music is played at the cemetery. Sometimes in Japan, they play my music a little bit, in a quiet atmosphere. It’s a little strange feeling, but it’s not bad!

What’s there left for you to do?
I’ve composed music for over 20 years and I’d like to keep going, to keep my style. This music is for everybody and I’m trying to compose the good music for the people. It’s kind of never ending. Music is my life.

Wir gelangen, in Verbindung mit dem Mann zu bekommen, als er in Stadt war, um über sein gegenwärtiges Album zu reden, An Sie Denkend. Und dies ist was er sagen mußte:
Erzählen Sie uns mehr über Ihr spätestes Album, An Sie Denkend.
Ich komponierte diese Lieder letztes Jahr, letzten Winter. Dort ist eine Erzählung hinter dem Klavier auf der vorderen Decke, ist es ein wirklich trauriges Ding. Mein Hausatelier hatte eine Wasserleitung, die barst, und dieses Klavier war unter der Pfeife, die brach. Das war sehr traurig für mich, weil dieses Klavier ein wirklich wichtiges Klavier für mich war. Ich komponierte meine Lieder auf diesem Klavier und ich habe viele Gedächtnisse dieses Klaviers. Ich habe dies für fast 10 Jahre gehabt, ich weiß nicht auf wievielen Liedern ich gebildet habe es. Aber ich habe noch dieses Klavier, ich versuche es zu reparieren. Vielleicht wird es ein Ehepaar von Jahren nehmen, aber ich nahm Bilder von diesem Klavier und benutzte es für die Albumdecke. Bezüglich des Titels (es ist) über mein Publikum und meine Familie.
Haben Sie besondere Favoriten?
Mir gefällt jedes Lied, besonders Fest und 'Denkend An Sie', wo mein Freund eine karibische Flöte spielte. Ich werde versuchen, irgendwie mit anderen Künstlern zusammenzuarbeiten. Und 'Fest' und 'Estrella', jene Lieder sind spanisches Lot, mag von Künstlern von dem spanischen Gebiet.
Sie haben viele Belohnungen gewonnen, wie man jenes Gefühl tut?
Das ist ein wirklich gutes Ding, nachdem es Alben und Lieder nominiert hat. Ich glaube, daß ich beim Grammies als sechsmal nominiert wurde. Es war gut, aber es ist nicht der Grund, den wir bearbeiten. Wir komponieren die Lieder für das Publikum, für alle Lebewesen. Ich hatte niemals Erziehung in Musik, ich lernte Musik zu komponieren mich. Das scheint nicht beruflich zu sein, aber ich möchte dies noch für eine lange Zeit tund fortfahren.
Was denken Sie daran, daß Ihre Musik an Hochzeiten und dergleichen benutzt wird?
Ich denke niemals über meine Musik nach, als in jener Art von Situationen benutzt zu werden. Aber ich hatte die Erfahrung der Hochzeit, sogar an der Gelegenheit von der Geburt oder Tod. Einige meiner Musik werden am Friedhof gespielt. Manchmal in Japan, spielen sie meine Musik ein bißchen in einer ruhigen Atmosphäre. Es ist ein wenig seltsames Gefühl, aber es ist nicht schlecht!
Was es gibt hinterließ für Sie zu tun?
Ich habe Musik für hinüber 20 Jahre komponiert und ich möchte gehend behalten, um meinen Stil zu behalten. Diese Musik ist für jeden und ich versuche, die gute Musik für die Leute zu komponieren. Es beendet irgendwie niemals. Musik ist mein Leben.
