"Oh, no! Not another Christmas CD," I moaned as I opened this package from New Age master musician Kitaro. Too many carol albums can be as cloying as a mouthful of peppermint candy. On the other hand, I find Kitaro's music powerful but cerebral. Kitaro producing Christmas carols seemed about as incongruous as Paul Bunyan in a creche.

What kind of album is this? Bright and crisp as a red apple on Christmas morning. Full of inventive surprises. Sophisticated. Joyful. Packed with old favorites, delicately treated to electronic and acoustic tweaking. The fun transitions, natural winter sounds like blowing winds, never give away the cut that comes next. Children of the International Peace Choir add their innocent voices to the mix. The child soloist on "The Little Drummer Boy" could have been your kid, with his lisping pronunciation and earnest but slightly flat voice.

Most of the cuts are instrumental, with just enough vocalizing to add lustre. Okay, so Kitaro goes overboard making "Jingle Bells" sound different (it does), but by and large this album delivers a powdery Christmas treat.

"Oh, nein! Nicht noch Weihnachten CD" stöhnte Ich, da ich diese Packung von Neuem Alters-Meistermusiker Kitaro aufmachte. Auch viele Liedalben können so cloying sein wie ein Brocken peppermint-Bonbon. Andererseits finde ich Kitaros Musik mächtig aber intellektuell. Kitaro-erzeugungs-Weihnachten-Lieder schienen dabei so inkongruent wie Paul Bunyan in einer Kinderkrippe zu sein.

Welche Art von Album ist dies? Hell und Kartoffelchip als ein roter Apfel auf Weihnachten-Morgen. Voll von erfinderischen Überraschungen. Hochentwickelt. Freudig. Mit alten Favoriten, zart mit elektronischem und akustischem Kneifen bewirtet, gepackt. Die lustigen Übergänge, der natürliche Winter klingt wie Blaswinde, geben Sie niemals den Schnitt weg, der nächstens kommt. Kinder des Internationalen Friedens-Chores fügen ihre unschuldigen Stimmen der Mischung hinzu. Der Kindersolist auf "Der Kleine Tambours-Junge" hätte Ihr Gör mit seiner Lispelaussprache und ernsthafter aber ein bißchen flacher Stimme sein können.

Die meisten Schnitte sind behilflich, damit, gerade genug zu äußern, um Lüster hinzuzufügen. In Ordnung geht Kitaro so über Bord, "Geklingel-Glocken-" Klang unterschiedlich machend (es tut), aber im großen und ganzen liefert dieses Album eine pulvrige Weihnachten-Festlichkeit.
