Composer Kitaro, with a Golden Globe Award, multiple Grammy nominations, and his newest album, Gaia, released during mid-1998, is revered for his ability to embody the human spirit with music of passion and drama. Through his seemingly endless world tours Kitaro is constantly exposed to the diversity of world cultures and the impacts of humanity upon nature and of nature upon humanity.
The title of Kitaro's newest release reflects his tribute to our planet. The title loosely translates to
'Goddess of the Earth' or 'Mother Earth'. The tracks resonate with the history embodied in some of Mother's Earth most precious gifts, including pre-Columbian wind and percussion instruments dating back to the 1300's. These instruments are used m Kitaro's music to help connect the old with the new. Wood is the natural building block supplied by Mother Earth and used to create virtually everything humans need; from fire, to shelter, to shrines ...to music.
Kitaro is the consummate hyphenate: composer-arranger-producer-performer-multi-instrumentalist. His music is simply "spiritual", he says, distinguished by its warmth and emotion as opposed to the New Age emphasis on digital technique over humanness. "Feeling", he adds, "is the most important element in my music".
This is evident in over two dozen albums Kitaro has released internationally, culminating in his latest Gaia, an exploration of respect and how it relates to ancient Japanese traditions. This new album is based in part on vocal chanting meant to facilitate communications with nature. Much of Gaia's music was inspired by Kitaro's witnessing of the `On Bashira' or `Mi Hashira' festival, which take place in Japan.
The music here is derived from the festival's activities. Every seven years, eight selected groups of individuals are chosen to be spiritually cleansed. They participate in cutting eight individual trees. Prior to cutting, participants ascend a mountain and in an attempt to spiritually connect, speak with the heavens through the trees. As people watch and become physically involved in the activity, the trees are allowed to fall down the mountain. The trees eventually become one of eight posts, the cornerstones and new foundation of the ceremonial shrine. Through these events, respect is attained as nature helps these individuals become in touch with themselves.
Kitaro's music is increasingly progressive, full of innovative touches. It is a haunting study in contrasts. The pieces of Gaia, each with a strong and distinct character, evoke a sense of mystery and provide a perfect atmosphere by which to both meditate and move; a far reaching musical journey drawing East and West together.
