AN OliveR STONE FILM
Music composed and produced by Kitaro
Prologue:
....For you see, the face of destiny or luck or god that gives us war also
gives us other kinds of pain:
the loss of health and youth; the loss of loved ones or of love; the fear that
we will end our days alone.
Some people suffer in peace the way others suffer in war. The special gift of
that suffering, I haved learned,
is how to be strong while we are weak, how to be brave when we are afraid, how
to be wise in the midst of
confusion, and how to let go of that we can no longer hold. In this way, anger
can teach forgiveness,
hate can teach us love, and war can teach us peace.
( Phung Thi Le Ly Hayslip - San Diego, California, October 1988 )

The movie Heaven & Earth is a moving and touching film
that should be experienced by all.
-
It is based on the true story of Phung Thi Le Ly Hayslip.
She was born is a small farming village called Ky La. Her country of Vietnam
has been plagued by war for many, many years. First the Chinese, then the
Japanese, and since the 1880's the French have dominated her land as part of
it's Indochinese colonial empire. Since her small village is far from these
foreign rulers life continued as it had for many generations. Peaceful
rice-farmers bringing forth their harvest and following the teachings of
their Lord Buddha. Protected by Ong Troi, Father Heaven, and Met Dat, Mother
Earth. It is in the middle these peaceful people live - - Trio va Dat - -
Between Heaven and Earth.
-
But in 1953 War came to their peaceful little village, the
war against the French. Then in 1963 another war woke their sleepy little
village, but this war would tear at this countries heart. A civil war that
would change life in this part of the world forever. The Vietcong came
tearing families apart, putting brother against brother, and father against
son, all for the sake of freedom, or that's how it seemed to them. Freedom
from foreign rule for so many years, the right to speak for it's self and
it's people. But the price was greater then anyone could imagine.
-
In this movie you see the life of Le Ly being raised in a
country torn by war. You will also see how it changed her country and ours,
and the prices both had to pay. Your emotions will be tested by this heart
gripping true life saga as will the brilliant music composed by Kitaro for
this film.

Directed by Oliver Stone and based on two memoirs
co-authored by Phung Thi Le Ly Hayslip.
