The story of
Cirque Ingenieux

Both on stage and off, Cirque Ingeniuex has become a journey of discovery, of challenge and of happy endings. From the very beginning it was a melding of disparate worlds. Cirque Ingenieux's original creator, Neil Goldberg, joined forces with theatrical producer, Ken Gentry, and director, Joe Leonardo, to bring the European Cirque tradition to the United States in a manner that had never been seen before: a Broadway-style production with a strong story-line and the ability to tour the country playing legitimate proscenium theatres in cities large and small.

Bringing these two worlds together was an exciting and challenging process. Performance artists, whose focus had always been on physical strength and craft, were asked to act a role, to create complex characters. Likewise, theatre artists - writers - and choreographers - were asked to use the performers' amazing physical skill as the key element in the story they planned to tell. The stellar designer team, which included Jerome Sirlin for sets and projections, Howell Binkley for lights and Jonathon Bixby for costumes, happily gave their imaginations free reign in a way that Broadway seldom allows. The final product of this unique union is proof of the riches that come with collaboration.

To a large degree, it was the work of Kitaro that helped bring together the different elements of this grand scheme. Like the other artists involved, he was asked to extend himself beyond his previous accomplishments. His contribution was integral to the job of telling the story of Cirque Ingenieux and he rose to the challenge with a score that ranges in style and depth from a lilting Viennese waltz to a driving contemporary beat and some painfully haunting melodies, veritable calls from ,the other side.'

Working with these elements: a rich Kitaro score, literally awe-some performance artistry and all the tools of the Broadway theatre, a unique story began to emerge. Without use of dialogue, it had to be told purely through visual effect and music. What resulted is a simple tale with surprising resonance and an ability to touch the audience on a very personal level.

Like the creators of Cirque Ingenieux, the story's protaganist ventures into unexplored territory. Set at the turn-of-the-century, the story follows young Sarah as she falls in love with an old-fashioned, single-ring circus, returns to the empty tent late that night and finds herself drawn into a fascinating and disturbing world of fantasy. With a loving older brother following close on her heels, she travels through the solar system, chooses her destiny from among an endless series of doors waltzes with bizarre new friends, watches her brother disappear before her eyes and then follows him into the underworld where only she can successfully orchestrate his escape. In the end, she finds the strength and ability within herself to become a performer of grace and beauty, and to strive for the artistry she witnessed before embarking on her bizarre journey. Woven into the story are elements of loyalty, spiritual guidance from beyond the 'veil,' and perhaps most importantly, the strength of laughter and the sheer joy of life. Like Cirque Ingenieux's creative team, Sarah finds new strength and new possibility through the myriad of challenges that life and art put in her path.

Cirque Ingenieux

PBS Special filmed at Buffalo's historic Shea's Performing Arts Center to begin airing Aug 15 as part of PBS national fund drive

Attention Entertainment and/or TV Reporters!
Soundtrack available for review

Five time Grammy nominated artist Kitaro has broken into Broadway with a soundscore created, composed and performed for the backdrop to Cirque Ingenieux, an original story in the European Cirque tradition.

We invite you to hear Cirque Ingenieux for yourself when the production debuts as part of the Public Broadcasting System's (PBS) nationwide fund drive. You may also hear Kitaro's soundtrack, available for the asking, from Domo Records.

Set at the turn of the century, Cirque Ingenieux is the story of a young girl who falls in love with a single ring circus. Returning to the empty tent later that night she discovers a magical and sometimes disturbing display of performance artistry. Without the use of dialogue, the story of Cirque Ingenieux had to be told purely through visual and musical effects. Piecing together the different elements of this grand scheme is the music of Kitaro. The resulting soundtrack ranges from a Viennese Waltz to a driving contemporary beat and features painfully haunting melodies.
